What was I thinking? I have been asking myself this since January 1st when I woke up. I am trying to quit smoking and I'm about to snap! I am wearing the patches but I am just feeling mean, snappy and irritated they don't seem to be helping this time! I have quit before a couple of times actually but I end up picking them up again even months after I quit. Seriously if I don't stick with it this time I will never and I do mean never even bother trying again. It is just not worth it maybe if they could sedate me or something through the first week...

Aww... quitting is hard. I'm in the same boat as you: I've quit many times before and stick to it for a while, but it never lasts. I was smoking about a pack and a half every day, and finally I just decided that enough was enough. I was killing myself. So...I'll share with you the approach I've taken and it works really well for me.
ReplyDeleteYou know how with dieting, people say that if you starve yourself you'll never lose the weight because you will end up "cheating." We have to allow ourselves to indulge. I know that eating food is not nearly the same thing as smoking, but to smokers...it almost is the same, isn't it? So I just cut back. Now, I MIGHT smoke one pack a week. I started out by smoking one in the morning before work, one of the way home from work, and one after dinner. Then, I cut out the one in the mornings because it was getting cold and I don't smoke in our house. It was pretty easy. Then, I cut out the smoke on the way home from work. I usually only smoke once a day. And like this past week, I've been sick and my throat is toooo sore to even be thinking about smoking. So I haven't smoke in a few days, and I'm find without it. I know that as soon as I'm better, I'll go back to my one a day. But to me...it's like dieting for breakfast and lunch, and eating good stuff for dinner. All day long, I am not a smoker. Nobody knows me as a smoker. But at night...I'll give in and smoke one. And maybe it's not healthy, but it's not as bad as a pack and a half every day.
Whatever you do, good luck and I hope you are successful!
You were thinking you want a long, healthy life with ME! Keep it up! You can do it :)
ReplyDeleteI've never smoked so I can' speak to what you are going through, but I'm sure you can do anything you put your mind to!
ReplyDeleteYou can do it! I know it's hard but think about that sweet new nephew of yours. If you can't do it for yourself, do it for him!!! And don't forget....we're all here to support you!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I quit smoking, I seriously went cold turkey. Chew gum. Exercise. Craft. Keep your hands busy. I always wanted a cigarette more when I was driving. To get rid of the craving, I always have something to drink and a light snack in the car. Don't give up. It's definitely going to be worth it in the end.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had some advice for you! I am so sorry that it is tough. Hang in there! You can do it!
ReplyDeleteMy husband has smoked since he was 13. He has tried many many times and always goes back. I don't want to discourage you - we always bug him about quitting but he says I HAVE TO WANT TO. He enjoys smoking too much. What can I do??????
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard, I know! Just gum gum gum and keep your hands busy. For me, it's mostly just missing having something in my hands. I know you can do it! I still struggle and cheat sometimes, but I always found cold turkey to work best. Also, I'd stay away from places with people who frequently smoked, if possible. Sucks, but the pressure can be TOO much!
ReplyDeleteGood luck, girl! You can ABSOLUTELY do it!
My friend Carrie quit smoking recently. I thought she would NEVER quit. She tried so many times. She went to Target and got some nicotine lozenges and that the did the trick for her! good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have heard that is so stinking hard... keep your chin up and just pushing though. Take it a day at a time!! :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I've never smoked but my husband did and LOVED it. He seriously had zero intention of ever quitting while I on the other hand wanted him to quit immediately. It was tough and he did have set backs but he eventually triumphed and if you ask him today, he's super happy about it. He used the gum instead of the patches and I think it helped him because it was something to do with his mouth. Good luck and don't accept failure even if you do have a small set back. It will be well worth it I'm sure :)
